Last Saturday the Life is Living annual celebration took place. This beautiful celebration of life and community started in 2008 and I have had the opportunity to experience this space since 2010. The Life is Living website provides a great explanation of their exemplary work in the community.

Justice at Life is Living

“LIFE is LIVING establishes a new model for partnerships between diverse and under-resourced communities, green action agencies, and the contemporary arts world.

…Under the artistic direction of Marc Bamuthi Joseph, LIFE is LIVING has grown from a festival that uses art to foster environmental justice to a mobilized campaign much larger in scope. Highly successful LIFE is LIVING events have taken place in Harlem, Chicago, Houston, and Oakland, with further work proposed for Philadelphia, San Francisco, and the Twin Cities.

The campaign includes a traveling environmental caucus & concert, an invitational Graffiti Battle, live action sports, sustainable materials construction projects, and a Speak Green youth poetry event. As we reflect the voices of an emerging cultural majority, we recognize that our arts practices must echo and sustain the lives of the communities we engage.”

Dead Prez at Life is Living

This event gets better every year. This year’s headlining guest, Dead Prez, known for lyrical content that challenges systems of oppression, dismantled the sound system at Life is Living when they started their set with Malcolm, Garvey, Huey. The sound cut out quite a few times during their opening number, but they continued to shine and once the sound came back, they moved the crowd.
I’m glad I witnessed such a thoughtful and positive movement in the community, for free at that! Check out Life is Living for more information about the festival and upcoming events in a city near you.
